In Rabat, the conversion of a layered dwelling explores precisely this idea. The original vernacular limestone dwelling, with its thick walls, introverted courtyard and layered domestic spaces, is not treated as static artefact. Instead, new spatial sequences are introduced that amplify the latent qualities of the space. The original small courtyard is enlarged, dramatised and overlooked by small scale yet geometrically present contemporary interventions. Unexpected spatial alignments reframe how its inhabitants move through the house allowing for a renewed dynamism and a continued reengagement with the heavy limestone container. Staircases, disobedient of the geometric morality dictated by the historic rooms, slice through the existing volumes, acting as a dynamic datum exposing the multiple levels and, by contrast, bringing atention to the detailed beauty of an otherwise easily traversed walled space.
